
A Justice of the Peace is responsible for all Misdemeanor Criminal cases that occur within Pima County, all Felony Criminal Preliminary Hearings which bind defendants over to Pima County Superior Court for Felony Proceedings, and civil litigation including small claims of less than $10,000. Having worked in Pima County Justice Court as a prosecuting attorney, representing the rights of victims and defendants for approximately 2 years, I understand the responsibilities of a Justice of the Peace. It requires compassion, knowledge of the law and a fair and balanced application of the law, it’s not about winning a case but doing the right thing for the right reasons, which is a principle I have built my life around. They oversee cases in a fair, balanced, ethical, and respectful way to ensure integrity and protect the Constitutional Rights of both defendants and victims. As a JP it is important to evaluate the facts and evidence presented, and render a ruling in accordance with the law, not personal feelings or beliefs, which is exactly what I’ve done as an Attorney for Pima County.
